Description
Bronze. Japan, Meiji-period (1868 – 1912)
Large, decoratively effective bronze. A recumbent elephant, embellished with decorative chains and tassels. The short tusks are directed frontally, the trunk curled inward. Sitting on the leaf-shaped saddlecloth, is a long haired maiden reading a scroll. It is the young courtesan Kimi, supposedly an incarnation of the Fugen Bosatsu (the Bodhisattva Samantabharda, who likewise sits on an elephant), according to Saigyo Hoshi’s dream. Dark-brown patina, very good condition.
