Description
Okimono, ivory. China, late Qing-Dynasty, approx. 1900 to 1st third of 20th cent.
Large, elaborately worked Okimono depicting a bearded sennin, recognisable by his Artemisia-leaf apron. In one hand he is holding a bell with a vajra-knob and leaning against a bizarrely gnarled stick. On it and on himself, rats are climbing around like monkeys - three around and on the head. One of the animals is holding up a scroll. On the ground is a hyotan (bottle-gourd), symbol of longevity. On the bottom, the inscription Itsu Sen, which literally means "an immortal" (theoretically could also be read as a name or signature, Issen).
