Description
Netsuke, ivory. Japan, 18th cent.
Very good work with beautiful age-patina! The standing sennin (immortal hermit) has one elevated foot and a bamboo rod and hyotan, a bottle-gourd, in his hands. His horse is just emerging from it. To be precise, it is a white Muli on which this magician has ridden across long distances. Here Chokaro is not only depicted in the usual style of a sennin with leaf-garments etc…, but in that of a Chinese Xianren (the same symbol as sennin), an immortal Daoist magician. Chokaro is one of the eight Chinese immortals, the Baxian. Vivid facial features of the bearded figure, himotoshi on the back (one hole through the sleeve), very good condition.
