Description
tinted pictorial lithographed title by & after Alexandre Bida, 24 tinted plates comprising: 12 views after Barbot by Eug. Ciceri and C. Bour, 12 costume & character studies by & after Alexandre Bida, titled in French, Arabic and English, all printed by Lemercier, in excellent internal condition, contemporary half morocco, upper cover titled in gilt "Souvenirs / d'Egypte", slightly rubbed, [Colas I.326; not in Atabey or Blackmer], large folio, Paris, [c.1850]. A wonderful example of this excellent, scarce album by the two renowned French Orientalists . The plates include twelve lithographs after Barbot of Egyptian inhabited views and cities from Philae to Cairo, ancient and modern; the twelve beautifully-observed character studies of the people Bida encountered include an Albanian, a Copt, dancers, ladies, a donkey driver and a groom. Bida studied under Eugene Delacroix, before travelling extensively through Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon and Palestine. "E. Barbot" is Prosper Barbot (1798-1878), a pupil of Jules Coignet and Louis Watelet, who made two journeys to Egypt in 1844 and 1846 travelling from Cairo south across the desert.
