Description
Sagami, Moon over Kamakura, Omori Hikoshichi, No. 28 from the series: Snow, Moon, Flowers

Fantastic illustration from the famous tale Taiheiki showing the warrior Omori Hikoshichi rescuing the young princess Chihaya, the daughter of Kusunoki Masahige, his old enemy. Carrying her across a river on his back, her reflection in the water showed two small horns on her head, indicating that she had changed into a demon, intent on killing Omori to avenge her father's death. He looks into the water, scowling as he realizes what she has become, ready to draw his sword and defend himself. The moon glows behind the gently waving branches of a tree. The inset above shows a young samurai bowing before a warrior in full armor. A terrific scene from this old tale, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black of the robe.
