FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE OF THIS VERY IMPORTANT TREATISE ON ARCHITECTURE, IN A CONTEMPORARY PARISIAN BINDING IN DARK BROWN CALF
De L'Orme, Philibert. Le premier tome de l’architecture de Philibert De L’Orme, conseillier et aumosnier ordinaire du Roy et Abbé de S. Serge lez Angiers. Paris: Frédéric Morel,1568.
Folio (the leaf 375 x 240 mm), contemporary Parisian binding in dark brown calf, central gilt plaque on covers, spine gilt in compartments, golden edges, a réglé copy (so printing space ruled in red throughout). Light water-staining inside, spine carefully restored, corners or boards a bit worn.
Title within elaborate woodcut border, woodcut initials and headpieces, many large woodcut illustrations (some double-page), ff. [9], 112, [1], 113-264, 267-283, [1], lacking leaves Bbb1-2 (ff. 265-266).
First edition, second issue of this very important treatise on architecture.
Some copies are reported to have an errata (placed after the privilege leaf, which concludes our copy), which is not present here. Book sold not subject to return. Another incomplete copy (not with such binding) currently offered on the market at 6.500 euro, last complete copy sold in 2012 at Sotheby’s for 16.250 euro.
