In Frank Stella’s Moby Dick series, Stella created Herman Melville inspired prints, paintings and sculptures and named each for one of "Moby Dick’s" 135 chapters. The series, which is central to his later career, was created by Stella in the 1980’s and 1990’s and can be seen as his tribute to the abstract expressionists of the post-war years. Working with the master printer Ken Tyler, Frank Stella was able to create complicated mixed-media prints that resembled sculptures.

This very large etching and aquatint with carborundum and relief printing on TGL handmade extends 73 1/4 x 53 1/2 inches (186 x 135 3/4 cm). It was executed in 1991 and is signed, numbered 12/22 and dated in pencil, lower left with full margins.

Frank Stella (AMERICAN, 1936)

From the 1970s up to the 1990s Frank Stella, the famous contemporary American artist, turned his style from minimalism to a very dynamic and highly plastic style. The artist’s works have been internationally exhibited. Stella has won numerous awards from renowned universities. Barack Obama recently awarded him with the National Medal of Arts.
