In this dynamic lithograph, screenprinted images of four of New York's major cultural institutions lay within blocks of primary colors: the Guggenheim Museum, Carnegie Hall, the Cooper-Hewitt and the New York Public Library. This print by Robert Motherwell was created for his "New York, NY" Suite. Although his paintings are often devoid of representational imagery, Motherwell widely used images in his prints.
Printed and published by Tyler Graphics in 1982, this print is in very good condition with minor handling creases. “New York Cultural Institutions” is signed in pencil on the lower left, and numbered “II/XXXV” on the lower right. Measuring 30 1/4 x 22 1/2 inches, the print is unframed with full margins and deckled edges.
Robert Motherwell (AMERICAN, 1915-1991)
A central figure of the American Abstract Expressionist movement, Robert Motherwell was among the most educated of the New York School, studying literature, philosophy and the European modern tradition. Known for his use of bold colors, simple shapes and dynamic, gestural strokes, Motherwell was the unofficial spokesman of Abstract Expressionism, lecturing widely on the merits of abstraction. In 1944, he was granted his first solo show at Peggy Guggenheim’s "Art of This Century" exhibition. In 1958-9 Motherwell was included in the "New American Painting" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and was given his first major retrospective there in 1965. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Motherwell died in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1991.
