This is a truly one-of-a-kind six-piece sterling silver Tiffany & Co. tea set; it was displayed by Tiffany’s at the Columbian Exposition that was held in Chicago in 1893. This Exposition, which commemorated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the ‘New World’, is considered the most important of over one hundred Worlds’ Fairs held between 1851-1925. Tiffany selected 500 of their very finest items to showcase in their “Million Dollar Exhibition”, one of the Exposition’s most popular attractions, and this very tea set was in it. It has been beautifully made in the neo-classical style, popular in Georgian England. All pieces sit on four low paw feet which are surrounded by miniature roses and scrolling forms, the upper rims of the pieces have also been accented with miniature rose motifs. Gently swirling incised lines flow around the lower portion of each piece, and has been repeating in a more simplified manner around the hinged lids of the tea pot, coffee pot, hot water heater, and on the covered sugar bowl. A matching waste bowl completes the set. The base of each piece has been engraved with a three-letter monogram, ERA, together with the date 1893. The pieces are also stamped with a pattern number, “Tiffany & Co. Makers”, “Sterling Silver”, “M” mark used during this period, the amount of contents each piece can hold, and a special emblem of a globe of the world containing the words “Tiffany & Co.” which was used exclusively for items showcased at the Exposition.
