Item Details
Description
This is a fine English sterling silver claret jug from the Victorian era. The jug has an ovoid form with bright cut engraved decoration as well as applied mask decoration to the body. There are three oval panels, each bright cut engraved with a coat of arms. These arms appear to show the arms of Boyd impaling and quartering a number of variants of the arms of Anderson. The body is supported by a cherub seated on a circular decorated base. The underside of the lip has a cast and applied decoration mask. A maiden and cherub decorate the cast handle. The base is marked with an inscription which reads, “Presented to Edward Fenwick Boyd by the Consett Iron Company June 1888” “The gift of E. F. Boyd to his son George Fenwick July 1888 to be handed down as an heirloom”. The jug is approx. 16”, approx. 4” in diameter, and weighs approx. 33 troy ounces.
