Description
Mexican Folk Art School, [20th Century]. "Carved Coconut Coin Bank (Soldadera)". Coconut sculpture. c1960s?. Generally good condition. Small losses near coin slot, two small pinholes. Provenance: From a highly important private collection, Mexico City. Dimensions: 2 3/4 in. height x 3 1/2 in. length x 2 5/8 in. depth. Probably from the area around the city of Vera Cruz, Mexico, based on the forms created by prisoners in the San Juan de Ulua prison in that city, though possibly from Jalapa (Xalapa), the capital of the state of Vera Cruz. Intricately carved coconut, very good patina. Face on one end with a mouth formed by a wedge-shaped hole below a mustache, nose, and mother-of-pearl eyes. Depicts a "Soldadera" (female revolutionary) on one side, a dancing couple on the other. Mother-of-pearl inlaid Mexican eagle. An unusual and seldom seen form of Mexican folk art.
