Description
N 288 5th (Royal) Gurkha Rifles, Summer Uniform, 1882. Complete 8 figure set. Originally raised at the now well known frontier town of Abbotabad, Pakistan, to hold the Hazara frontier. Saw extensive action on the tribal areas and participated in the Second Afghan War (1878-80) under Lord Frederick S. Roberts. Roberts was so impressed with their valor and fidelity that when he became an Earl he chose the image of a 5th Gurkha as one of the two "supporters" of his coat of arms. In WW I elements of the 5th were the last unit to leave Gallipoli. For their service during the war, they received the title "Royal" in 1921. By the end of WW II, the regiment displayed a total of 6 Victoria Crosses. They later saw service under United Nations mandates in "liberated Africa." Set N 288 is, according to Mr. Wade, the first set in the Nostalgia line produced by Andrew Rose. Offered in a limited edition of only 81 sets. Extract of historical narrative by Shamus O.D. Wade. Condition Excellent.
