This striking oil painting of three white horses dates from the 1880's, and is based on the popular 1848 painting Pharaoh's Horses by British sporting and animal painter John Fredrick Herring Sr. It is not a literal copy, but the main composition is immediately identifiable. It is unsigned. In the British art journal of the time, Pharaoh's Horses was listed as one of Herring's most popular paintings. The image found its way into many American and European homes by the late-1800s as a mezzotint engraving. The painting measures 20"x20" The frame is 25" x 25" It is painted on canvas marked Wadsworth Howland & Co Boston and Chicago, and the stretcher bars are stamped PAT. 1884. When we acquired it, the painting was severely damaged on the left side, and needed to be relined onto a firm support. We chose to mount it onto a clear acrylic sheet, to preserve the view of the Wadsworth Howland & co. stamp. Once cleaning and restoration was complete, the acrylic-backed painting was reattached to the original stretcher bars, coated with non-yellowing varnish and installed into a new, custom-made frame.
