Description
A wonderful summer day by a river is the subject of this strongly rendered oil painting on Masonite panel. The application of thick paint is textured by masterfully expressive brush work which is the hallmark of many New England-trained plein-air painters. Most notably, this technique has thrived among the Cape Ann art colonies which were once dominated by Emile Gruppe. This painting is signed "Myer Schwolsky" and dated "3/58" It comes in the original distressed wormwood cypress frame and is a fabulous decorative item in addition to being a strong work of art. I was not able to find other examples of paintings by Myer Schwolsky, but will be on the lookout for more. Artists of this skill are eventually recognized by collectors! What I was able to discover was that a man named Myer Schwolsky lived in Connecticut and worked as an attorney. It's such an unusual name, that I think he's our mystery artist. The painting is 16" x 20" Frame size is 22" x 26" The painting has been lightly cleaned. A few very small paint losses were filled in, and a final coat of non-yellowing gloss varnish brought out the snappy colors and contrasts.
