He was born on July 9, 1931 in Cambridge, in the family of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Pyotr Kapitsa, and died in Moscow on August 2, 2011 at the age of 80.Kapitsa graduated from Moscow State University, Faculty of Geography, in 1953. He took part on discovery of Lake Vostok in the Antarctic and participated in four Soviet expeditions to the South Pole.In 1967—1968 he headed geophysical expedition of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Eastern Africa. In the in the seventies he was a founder and first director of the Pacific Institute of Geography in Vladivostok and he put inestimable contribution to the development of the Department of Geophysical Sciences of FESU..He was a corresponding member of RAS, honored professor of the Moscow State University, doctor of geography, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and Russian Federation.
