Item Details
Description
These are six original vintage circa 1900 color cartoons by artist Charles Bart Bartholomew (signed Bart). Three pages, each printed on both sides.

1 & 2: Uncle Sam with guns blazing. 'New Colossus of Roads'. Nicaraquam Canal-All American Ditch. Germany/J. Bull in boat. Bryan Platform, Adlai VP candidate.
Reverse is of Democrat candidate Bryan with little Adlai on his hat.

3 & 4: GOP elephant with poem on how he will dance on donkey's neck on November 6th.
Tammany Tiger on reverse.

5 & 6: GOP elephant laughs at free silver ostrich.
British coats of arms-Mafeking on the reverse.

November 6th 1900.
Republican Party candidate: William McKinley, President of the United States.
Democratic Party Nomination: William Jennings Bryan and Adlai E. Stevenson.

Main Controversies (Nomination/Primaries):
Spanish-American War triggers national pride but complexity as the US move into the Philippines triggers an insurgency. Anti-imperialism movement builds some momentum as US annexes Philippines and Puerto Rico. March 14, 1900 Gold Standard Act - US on Gold Standard, Battle of Standard ends in Republican triumph.

Party Platform Issues: Republican Party: Praised President McKinley's record: improved business conditions, won Spanish-American War; defended postwar expansionism; established department of commerce; condemned Jim Crow, southern laws that blocked African-Americans voting; raised child labor age limit; constructed a canal in Panama.

Democratic Party: anti-imperialism platform; denounced colonial policies; condemned post-war expansionism; included silver plank.
~~Bartholomew was the political cartoonist for the Minneapolis Journal and was well known for his cartoons of the Spanish-American War and Expansion.

More political satire, caricatures, stereotypes, 'racist' cartoons. I am selling several vintage cartoons and caricatures by Bart and all seem to be around the same time. A few mention the Nov. 6th Presidential election so that puts them at the year 1900 when on November 6, Republican William McKinley defeated Democrat William Jennings Bryan.

Even though I don't know where these originated from, these are guaranteed old. I have been selling similar cartoons from Harpers Weekly, Puck and Judge for many years.

SIZE: Approx 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" each.

Other books Bart authored: Cartoons of the Spanish-American War by Bart [pseud.] with dates of important events; from the Minneapolis Journal, January 1899.

The Image-makers Arsenal in an Age of War and Empire, 1898-99: A Cartoon Essay, Featuring the Work of Charles Bartholomew (of the Minneapolis Journal).
