This double-leaf from a book of hours printed on vellum shows a masterly painted woodcut scene of the Crucifixion. The Latin text with scores of hand-painted initials in gold on red and blue ground was printed and painted by Simon Vostre or Tilman Kerver in Paris around 1515. The splendid metalcut border is particularly worthwhile mentioning.
This leaf is a prime document from the transitional phase between manuscript making and the beginning of book printing. Text and book decorations were made in style of a manuscript, the miniatures and the initials were hand-painted in classic style. Even though the Parisian masters showed a certain openness towards the new medium print, they were not able to defend their supremacy in Europe. Editions grew fast in the early days of book printing and soon it was impossible to execute book illustrations solely by hand.

The vellum leaf is in very good condition, the miniature in strong colors. Dimensions of double-leaf: 15.5 x 20.5 cm, border: 12 x 8 cm.
