Description
1st century AD. A cast figurine of a retiarius (net-fighter) gladiator advancing left, wearing low boots and with loincloth held in place by a wide belt and bare-headed; large galerus flange neck-protector to the left shoulder; right arm extended, left hand hollow; mounted on a custom-made stand. 109 grams, 82mm including stand (3 1/4"). UK art market, acquired prior to 1980. Retiarii were developed during the Augustan era; they often fought the gladiatorial types of Secutores or Myrmillones.
Condition
Very fine condition, right arm absent.
