1st century BC-1st century AD. The head from a statuette of a youthful goddess, possibly Diana, with carefully dressed hair drawn up to the rear of the head, deep-set eyes, small nose and narrow mouth with full lips. Cf. head of a matrona from Herculaneum in Roberts, P. Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum, London, 2013, fig.94. 304 grams, 82mm (3 1/4"). From the collection of a Mayfair gentleman, acquired in the 1970s.
