Item Details
Description
12th-13th century AD. A high status reliquary seal matrix with ribbed suspension loop above; to the flange, a carefully cut Lombardic script legend 'X+:QVE TIBI LEGO LEGE' (I read what you read) within beaded borders; in the centre, a banded agate 1st-2nd century AD Roman intaglio depicting a priest performing a purification ceremony, with wreath and palm frond, standing robed and cloaked with hands extended. Cf. a similar seal with legend in the British Museum, accession number 1911,0712.4, Tonnochy, A.B. Catalogue of British Seal-Dies in the British Museum, London, 1952, cat. no.704; Henig, M. The Re-use and Copying of Ancient Intaglios set in Medieval Personal Seals, mainly found in England: An aspect of the Renaissance of the 12th Century, London, 2008. 14 grams, 30mm (1 1/4"). Property of a Scottish gentleman; acquired from continental Europe in the late 1970s; gifted to his daughter in the early 1980s; thence by descent 2004. The seal is formed hollow with a shallow internal chamber, designed to accommodate a small relic or personal keepsake. The re-use of Roman intaglio gems has been linked to the renewed interest in classical iconography from the 12th century, and the deliberate reworking and re-conceptualisation of Hellenistic and Roman art in Christian allegorical terms. Images of warriors could be re-imagined as military saints, such as George or Michael, ready to strike down the enemies of the church. The development of the trade in cut gems of this kind has been linked to the personal connections made possible by the crusades, and the opening up of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean to travellers from western and northern Europe. Venetian, Pisan, Genoese and other merchants (gemmarii) created a trade network which extended into the Near East to serve this demand. The style and quality of workmanship indicates that this seal cannot be later in date than the 13th century AD.
