Lower Cretaceous, Albian Stage, 125 million years BP. A group of five fossil cephalopods comprising: a very well preserved ammonite Orthosphinctes callovian with a lustrous shell, bearing the collector's label 'Ammonite, Kranosphinctes callovian (sic), / Oxfordian, Upper Jurassic, c. 160=165 million years old, Madagascar'; an ammonite Lemuroceras with a highly iridescent shell, bearing the collector's label 'Ammonite, Lemuroceras, (opalescent), Lower Cretaceous, Albian Stage, c. 125 million years old, Madagascar'; an ammonite, Dactilioceras commune bearing the collector's label 'Ammonite, Dactilioceras commune, Upper Lias, Lower Jurassic, c. 150-170 million years old, Whitby, Yorkshire; two examples of Orthoceras, one polished, with a collector's label reading 'Cephalopod, Orthoceras, Devonian, c. 350-600 million years old, Sahara, Morocco, and an unaltered specimen bearing the collector's label 'Cephalopod, Orthoceras vagans, Upper Ordivician, Ashill Series, near Bala, Merionethshire, c. 425-440 million years old'. 884 grams total, 65-134mm (2 1/2 - 5 1/4"). Ex Bernard C. Pickard collection, Hampshire, UK. Ammonites are an extinct group of marine animals similar to the nautilus. Like the nautilus, ammonites had a soft body with tentacles that emerged from a hollow chambered shell utilized in the manner of a submarine's ballast tanks.
