An unusual celadon-ground Vase, early 19th century, painted in underglaze blue with the 'Hundred Boys' at various pursuits including bird fancying, lighting fireworks and the legend of Sima Guang, and enhanced in bright enamels and gilding with flowers, butterflies, birds and fruit, the neck with seeded blue dragon handles, slight wear,62.3cm Sima Guang was a Song sage who, in his boyhood, had saved a young companion who had fallen into a large jar, by smashing it with a stone. While frequently found on Kakiemon, Chelsea and Meissen, it is uncommon on Chinese porcelain.
