Description
DESCRIPTION: Romain (Erte) DeTirtoff (Russia/France, 1892-1990). Bronze sculpture. Angel. Impressed on rear of platform with signature and "50/350 Fine Art Acquisitions 1984". Erte was born Romain de Tirtoff in 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia, and is primarily known as an influential fashion illustrator and designer. He traveled to Paris at 19 to pursue his art career; it was there that the name "Erte"- a pronunciation of a nickname "RT"- came into being. His first assignment was to create costumes for Mata Hari; later he designed clothes for fashionable society women, movie stars such as Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer, sets for Hollywood films, and sets and costumes for the Follies Bergeres and the Paris Opera. In 1915, as a result of fashion houses shutting down, he began his 22 year career with Harper's Bazaar when the magazine published his first cover design. In the late sixties, the Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased an entire collection of 179 works from Erte's exhibition in New York. MEASUREMENTS: 20" x 6-1/2" x 13-1/2" high. CONDITION: Light wear to black paint on base.
