Item Details
Description
A Victorian silver box, by Carrington & Co., London 1898, of half fluted, compressed oval form, with a band of flower heads to the cover, inscribed 'Derby, Flying Fox, 1899', 13cm wide, 7oz Flying Fox was a thoroughbred racehorse owned by the Duke of Westminster. He was sired by Orme and his dam was Vampire. In 1899, he became only the eighth horse to have won the English Triple Crown Races. Shortly after this success though, in late 1899, the Duke of Westminster died and his stable, including Flying Fox, was put up for auction. Flying Fox was bought by Edmond Blanc for £37,500 guineas and duly became the leading sire in France three times, with progeny including Ajax and Val d'Or.
