This coffee house table combines everything that is associated with Austrian Design around the time in 1950: Elegance in clear forms, executed with fine but simple materials, given a special attention to refined details. The square table stands on four cross-shaped feet made of brass. Further interesting is the contrast of the somewhat bright wood to the beautifully drawn burl veneer of the table top. Oswald Haerdtl designed this table around 1950, executed by the Werkstätte Hagenauer.

The table is 76 cm high and measures 60 x 60 cm. It is in very good condition with only few signs of age and wear.

Oswald Haerdtl (1899-1959)
Oswald Haerdtl worked as an architect, designer and lecturer in architecture in Austria and Poland. After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, he entered in the School of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1916. From 1919, he studied in the architecture class of Oskar Strnad. In addition, lectures by Josef Frank had a deep impact on him. After his studies, he worked as an assistant lecturer in the master class of Josef Hoffmann. As a result, he created designs of exhibitions that are considered his best early works. As his first work of architecture, he constructed a house in the Werkbund colony in Vienna built in 1931-1932. In 1935, he was appointed professor following his teacher Oskar Strnad in the class specializing in architecture. From 1938, he led a class specializing in commercial and industrial design at the Vienna School of Applied Arts parallel to his course in architecture. During the Second World War, Haerdtl opened a design office in Krakow, which moved to Wroclaw later. Haerdtl‘s main architectural works are considered the pavilions of the Republic of Austria, which he presented to the world exhibitions in Brussels in 1935 and in Paris in 1937.
