Description
Signed M. Landucci "The Gladiator" Oil on Canvas Painting Circa Mid 19th Century. This painting depicts a gladiators entrance into the Coliseum in ancient Rome to the cheers and jeers of the crowd while his opponent awaits him with trident and iaculum. Jean-Leon Gerome's (1824-1904) masterpiece "Pollice Verso" exhibits striking similarities to "The Gladiator." Jean-Leon Gerome studied under Paul Delaroche, whom he accompanied to Italy in 1843-44. Delaroche`s father-in-law, Horace Vernet, was director of the French Academy in Rome in the 1840s. Our research thus far has failed to yielded any connection between M. Landucci and the French Academy in Rome or any listings for M. Landucci. The painting measures 40" inches X 63.5"inches The mid 19th century Important and large Italian carved and gold gilded baroque style frame measures 58" inches X 81.5" inches.
Condition
Painting has been professionally cleaned and restored (see photos). Frame has been cleaned and is in good condition with minor gilt losses.
