Item Details
Description
Pre-columbian Olmec Serpentine Shamans Mask from Guerrero, Mexico, ca. 1000-400 B.C. Carved dark green serpentine face mask with typical Olmec features of wide nose, thick lips and epicanthic eyes. Perforated ears and two perforated holes at the side of the top portion of the mask for suspension.
This mask was most likely used by a shaman during ritual ceremonies. The mask conforms to ones face and the wholes in the eyes act as binoculars and focus centrally. The center whole on the mouth would have been used for a cane tube to blow or spit hallucinogenic snuff into the face (eyes, nose, mouth) of each participant.
Some masks were made for pure utilitarian purposes and not meant for ceremony, but, masks like this one were extremely well thought out on the way they were carved because they were meant to be used by the shaman. This mask was carved with such precision that you can sit the mask upright on its chin and spin it around and it will not fall. Most Olmec pieces are very symmetrical on how they were carved. Additionally, we must note that when contemplating these beautiful, mystical masks we are not only observing the physical features of the peoples that made them but also able to glimpse their technological prowess. These works of art were precisely carved from materials including Jade, Jadeite, Granite, Serpentine, Flint, and Alabaster. Impressively, this was all done without the aid of metal; these works were carved with tools made of stone!
This particular mask is carved from a material known as green serpentine usually found in the Tabasco region and geologically referred to as 'Williamsite serpentine'.
