Description
Edward Shippen Watson - Rector of St. James Episcopal Church, Lancaster, Pennsylvania 1870 - 1877. Wrote on religious themes. Offered here is an ALS, 8 full page letter to his Bishop [not named], St James Rectory, Lancaster, August 3, 1872. One vertical fold else very good condition. RE: The entire letter is Watson disagreeing with the Bishop about the "Philadelphia School" which is not where Watson would send Theological students. He is surprised that the Bishop thinks the ability of its professors is unsurpassed; Watson says it's teaching is "low church or Evangelical", it's mind is antagonistic to the mind of the church as stated in the Book of Common Prayer, question of how "they" view the Holy Eucharist, fast, feast, Holy & saints days, daily service for the students. The Bishop is forbidding the General Seminary. Watson says the students' rooms are paid for after months of work finding the money & they would be at sea if the Bishop refuses. Please regard this as an exceptional case & as to the trouble at the Seminary he will caution them again. More discussion of theological matters. Excellent example of intra-church conflIct.
