The SEL on offer was purchased in California in 2008 by the current owner. Since then it has been regularly driven and maintained. The Mercedes features Historic-number plates and is in pristine condition.

The SEL was first produced exclusively for the North American market in parallel with the 3.5-liter V8 version but in a larger model featuring a 4.5 liter engine which was delivered in May 1971 in export models 280 4.5 SE, 280 SEL 4.5 and 300 SEL 4.5 (W 109) . This was necessary with a lower compression design to meet the US emission regulations and what used to be the lower octane fuel used in the United States. The performance of the 4.5-liter engines in the USA with 146 kW (198 hp) were just under the level of the European engines which were 3.5 litre. A distinction can be observed in the automatic transmission of the 4.5-liter versions of the USA, which was that they already comply with the more modern type with torque converter - but in a three-speed automatic variant.
