He became a well-known radical Whig politician, serving as MP for Boroughbridge, Westminster and North Wiltshire where he resided at Ramsbury Manor. After his wife Lady Burdett died on the 13th January 1844, Sir Robert could not foresee any future for himself, and decided to stop eating, he died ten days later, and Sir Robert and Lady Burdett were buried on the same day in 1844 in the chancel of Ramsbury Church. Survived by one son and eventual heir, Colonel Robert Burdett, as well as five daughters. Their fifth daughter, Angela Burdett-Coutts, achieved later distinction as the richest woman in Britain and a noteworthy philanthropist. The baronetcy became extinct in 1951.
