"Promenade au bois de Boulogne" depicts two riders, loosely sketched in pencil, under the trees of the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. Located near the artist’s house at the time, the woods were a frequent subject, as were the members of society who paraded along the paths.
Executed in 1921, this drawing is stamped “Atelier Raoul Dufy” in the lower left. The work was purchased from Galerie Fanny Guillon-Laffaile, Paris, and is being offered with a photo-certificate from the gallery dated Paris, le 17 Novembre 1993.
Taped in upper corners, slight mat burn along edges; otherwise appears in basic good condition.
Raoul Dufy (French, 1877-1953)
Raoul Dufy was born on June 3rd, 1877 in Le Havre, France. His work is best associated with the Fauvist movement, having studied in the studio of Léon Bonnat at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1930 he was awarded the Carnegie Prize for L’avenue du Bois and in 1952 he received the first prize at the 26th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy. His work is currently held in several museum collections worldwide, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
