Wax lined; isolated area of vertical cracking in upper right corner. Under UV, strokes of retouch along upper right corner and upper left; dime-size touches of restoration in center; L-shaped area of retouch in center right. Otherwise appears in basic good condition.
Charles Edwin Lewis Green (American, 1844-1915)
Charles Edwin Lewis Green was born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1844, and became known as one of the seven “Lynn Beach Painters,” painting the marine and landscape scenes of his native area en plein air. From the 1880s through 1910, he was a regular exhibitor at the Boston Art Club, and had his first solo exhibition in 1886 at the J Eastman Chase Gallery. He also exhibited at the National Academy in 1887 and 1888, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1901, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1905. His works were collected by such figures as Martin Brimmer, the first president of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and by the wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes.
