This landscape painting by Charles Harold Davis, depicts a herd of cows grazing under the shade of a large tree, escaping from the heat of summer. “Afternoon Shade, Summer” is an example of the artist’s lively brushwork and bright color palette.


This oil on canvas is signed “C.H. Davis” in the lower left corner, and titled in pencil on the stretcher. The work measures 25 x 30 1/4 inches. It was exhibited at Gerald Peters in New York in the exhibition “The Intimate Landscape of Charles Herold Davis” from October 11th to November 10th, 2007.

Charles Harold Davis (American, 1856-1933)


Born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, Charles Harold Davis was one of the most successful landscape painters of his day, earning a reputation as a leading American Tonalist. After working in France, he adopted a luminous brand of Impressionism that brought him critical and popular acclaim. Throughout his career, Davis exhibited his work at the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, and the Society of American Artists in New York. His first solo exhibition was at Reichard and Company in New York in 1887. Davis’s work appeared regularly at the major national annuals, where he won numerous awards and honors, including the Pennsylvania Academy’s Lippincott Prize (1901), the National Academy of Design’s Altman Prize (1917), and a Gold Medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, held in San Francisco in 1915. Examples of Davis’s work can be found in major public collections throughout the United States, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Carnegie Institute.
