“A Peaceful Afternoon” was painted by Carl von Marr, depicting a small barefoot child sitting on a field surrounded by animals. The oil on panel is a prime example of von Marr’s interest in academic realism.
Signed “Carl Marr, Munchen” in the lower right corner, this work measures 14 3/4 x 11 inches.
Under UV, two vertical areas of retouch, largest measuring 2” in upper third; one vertical area of retouch in center measuring 1½”; strokes of retouch throughout, most significant in green pigments.
Carl von Marr (American/German, 1858-1936)
Born in Milwaukee in 1958, Carl von Marr trained under Henry Vianden. In 1875, Marr moved to Germany to study at the Royal Academy in Weimar, Berlin and Munich. After a brief time back in the States, Marr went back to Germany where he remained for the rest of his life. Among many honors, Carl von Marr in 1909 was granted royal status by three European royal houses. The largest collection of the artist’s work is on permanent display at the Museum of Wisconsin Art.
