“Morning Along the Coast (Cahasset Maine)” depicts a calm coastal scene in Maine, Bircher’s favorite subject after moving to New York in 1868. Although his studio was in the city, the artist spent much of his time travelling up and down the Atlantic coast sketching seascapes, which he would later transform into completed works. The muted gray palette of this work reveals a serenity along the shore, heightened by loose brushstrokes that allow the paper to show through and give the painting a luminous quality.

This watercolor and gouache by Alfred Thompson Bricher was painted in 1887, and is monogrammed in the lower right. It measures 3 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches.

Hinged to mat in upper right and left corners; Remnants of glue in six places on verso. Otherwise appears in basic good condition.

Alfred Thompson Bricher (American, 1837-1908)

Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1837, Alfred Thompson Bricher worked as a businessman in Boston until 1858 when he became a professional artist. In the 1860s he followed his contemporaries to the White Mountains where he studied with Albert Bierstadt, William Morris Hunt, Gabriella Eddy and Benjamin Champney. After moving to New York in 1868, Bricher became a member of the American Society of Painters in Water Colors and an associate of the National Academy of Design. His works were exhibited widely, including the Boston Athenaeum, the Boston Art Club, the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
