Item Details
Description
EXTREMELY RARE AUGUSTA CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA FEDERAL WALNUT SPICE / VALUABLES CHEST, the rectangular top over a hinged fielded-panel door above a single drawer fitted with likely original turned wooden pulls, raised on finely turned feet. Interior fitted with four valanced cubbies over six half drawers above a single full drawer, each with original brass ring pulls. Poplar secondary wood. Old surface with warm, mellow color. Circa 1820. 28 1/2" H, 21 3/4" W, 11" D.

Provenance: From the collection of Janet and the late Michael Parmer, Waynesboro, VA. Descended in the family of Hubert Grim, Jr., Swope, Augusta Co., VA.
Catalogue Note: Spice/valuables chests from the Shenandoah Valley are extremely rare and almost never appear on the open market. Of elegant proportions, the present example typifies the neat and plain style so popular in the South. The offering of such a fine piece, fresh to the market with family descent, represents a rare opportunity to own an important piece of Southern furniture.
