DABNEY CHESS SET IVORY WHALE BONE EBONY

Description: A full set of chess pieces, 32 in all, depicting King Neptune, Queen of the Sea, Dolphins, Lighthouses, Whales and Octopus. All are carved of sugar pine and hand painted with whale ivory and whale bone bases. The pieces are in a custom made box inlaid with hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs made of whale ivory and ebony. On the lid of the box is a silver plate with the words, " Presented with gratitude family Dabney 1806-1869 The pople of Horta Acores." The chess board is made of wood, the top and sides are covered with whale bone and ebony. This game was presented because Dabney used his ship to supply the people of Horta with food. The chess set was in the private collection of Raymond Burr.
Condition : Overall condition very good but for some small surface cracks to chess board
Size : Board - 21" by 21" Box - 14 1/2" tall by 10 1/4" wide. Chess Pieces 4 1/2" down to 3" each.
