The present print reveals a charming variant of the famous subway scene known from Billy Wilder’s film ‘The Seven Year Itch’. The film still depicts Marilyn posing in her beautiful white dress with whirling skirt on top of the ventilation shaft of the New York subway. It is said that it was Sam Shaw who came up with that fantastic setting.



The print verso shows the photographer’s stamp, the estate stamp (inscribed with pencil ‘4/30’) and the copyright stamp of the Shaw family. Besides, there is a gallery stamp ‘Atelier Deriaz Baulmes – Switzerland’ verso attached. The backside of the frame reveals further gallery labels. The print is in very good condition. The image size is 32.6 x 26 cm and the size of the sheet is 40 x 30 cm. The framed work measures 53 x 43 cm.



Sam Shaw (1911-1999)

Sam Shaw was born in New York and started to portray the stars of the New York music scene right after leaving school. In the 1940s, he was active as a courtroom artist, but also worked as a writer and photo journalist. During the following decade he was repeatedly commissioned by the film and portrayed stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Anthony Quinn and Marlon Brando. Later, in the 1960s, Shaw started to work as a director himself. His estate is still in the hand of his family and has been internationally exhibited many times. (cbo)
