A rare 19th century portrait of an Inuit family in traditional arctic clothing
The present albumen photograph was taken circa 1890 and depicts the portrait of an Inuit family. Dressed in traditional costume the family members including a dog pose before a painted forest backdrop. The artificial background suggests that the shot was taken in a photography studio. In the 19th and early 20th century there was a real fascination with the Arctic and Inuit people were brought to America to be photographed and studied for ethnographic purposes.
The photograph is numbered in pencil on verso. The print is in good condition considering its age; there is a vertical crease in the left half of the image, there are some handling creases and minor flaws to the surface. The paper shows foxing on the back. The sheet-sized image measures 20.1 x 16.7 cm. (tfa)
