Josef Sudek (1896-1976) – Czech photographer
Verso inscribed in pencil in Czech ‘Originálni fotografie Josefa Sudka / Anna Fárová’
Image size: 14.6 x 12.3 cm
Good condition
Josef Sudek is the most important Czech photographer of the 20th century; his works fetch up to €300,000 at international auctions
As a photographer Josef Sudek was at home in all genres, capturing impressive landscapes as well as nudes, portraits and still lifes. His work is characterized by a recurring high quality craftsmanship. The present picture, presumably taken in Prague, depicts a group of people in a park. The photographer, however, is not part of the celebratory gathering, he only captures the occasion from a distance. Thus the viewer perceives the scene as an atmospheric mélange of blurred silhouettes.
The photo is inscribed in pencil in Czech ‘Originálni fotografie Josefa Sudka / Anna Fárová’. The inscription by the Czech art historian Dr. Anna Fárová, who administered Sudek’s estate, confirms the authorship. The work is in good condition consistent with age with minor handling creases. The image size is 14.6 x 12.3 cm, the sheet size is 15.3 x 12.8 cm.
Josef Sudek (1896-1976)
Josef Sudek was born in Kolin, Bohemia, in 1896. As a young boy he trained in bookbinding. In 1915, he was called into military service by the Hungarian army, serving at the Italian frontline. An infected wound caused the amputation of his right arm. During his stay at hospital, he started taking pictures of his fellow inmates. After his dismissal he went to study graphic arts in Prague. In 1974, he gained fame in the United States with a number of exhibitions. At the age of 80, a large retrospective at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, which also moved on to the Photographer’s Gallery in London, honored his work. (tfa)
