Josef Sudek was one of the leading modern photographers of the 1930s; the auction record for one of his works currently sets at around €300,000

Josef Sudek was constantly fascinated by the picturesque landscapes he found in his hometown Prague. The present photograph was presumably taken in the 1960s and shows a view of the Moldavia with one of the characteristic bridges in the distance. The work owes its charming character to the small silhouettes in the center that suggest a grandmother and her grandchild feeding the swans on the bank of the river. The composition is deeply inspired by painting and corresponds to a number of Sudek’s photographs of snow-covered lakes and romantic forests.



The gelatin silver print is signed with black felt tip lower right ‘Sudek’. It is additionally signed with pencil ‘J. Sudek’ and fitted with the studio stamp ‘Foto Sudek, Praha III, Ujezd 20‘ on verso. The work is in very good condition considering its age. It is matted and framed on both sides. The visible image section measures 29 x 39.3 cm and the size of the framed work is 43 x 53.3 cm.



Josef Sudek (1896-1976)

Josef Sudek was born in Kolin, Bohemia, in 1896. As a young boy he trained in bookbinding. In 1915, he was called into military service by the Hungarian army, serving at the Italian frontline. An infected wound caused the amputation of his right arm. During his stay at hospital, he started taking pictures of his fellow inmates. After his dismissal he went to study graphic arts in Prague. In 1974, he gained fame in the United States with a number of exhibitions. At the age of 80, a large retrospective at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, which also moved on to the Photographer’s Gallery in London, honoured his work. (cbo)
