The black and white photograph shows a typical work by Albert Renger-Patzsch from the late 1920s, taken in the coal mine Zeche Scholven. As a representative of the New Objectivity movement, he developed a puristic and highly aesthetic style that successfully established industrial landscapes as worthy subject matter. Enclosed are two publications: ‘Die Welt der Pflanze. Band 1: Orchideen‘ published by Ernst Fuhrmann and with photographs of orchids by Renger-Patzsch and the book ‘Das Münster in Essen’ with 82 plates of photographs by Renger-Patzsch, signed and dedicated by the photographer ‘Herrn Alexander Böcking, 28. August 29 [illegible location] Albert Renger-Patzsch’.

On the back the photograph bears a typewritten label as well as the stamps ‘Freundeskreis Ernst Fuhrmann’, ‘Folkwang Verlag – Photo: Albert Renger Patzsch’ and ‘Wilhelm Arnholdt – Maschinensetzerei, Hamburg 20 – Falkenried 42’. The print is in good condition considering its age; there are a few very fine scratches in the surface. The image measures 20 x 15.3 cm, the dimensions of the sheet are 20.5 x 15.6. The mat measures 40 x 30 cm. The two books are in good condition showing signs of age and wear, the large volume with losses to the spine. The dimensions are 24.7 x 18.5 and 33 x 25.5 cm respectively.

Albert Renger-Patzsch (1897-1966)

Albert Renger-Patzsch began photography at an early age of twelve. After he served in WWII he studied chemistry in Dresden. He was the publisher of a number of photography books with scientific illustrations. His style is concentrated on sharply focused and realistic motifs that represent New Objectivity well. Renger-Patzsch proclaimed the view that the value of photography lies in the ability to reproduce the reality of an object. His archives had been destroyed entirely during WWII. After the war he moved to Wamel, Möhnsee and lived there for the rest of his life. (tfa)
