Typical Neapolitan coastline by Petruolo in the style of the school of Posillipo. The current highest bid for a similar painting by Petruolo is circa €17,000 Euro
Salvatore Petruolo’s (1857-1946) impasto and sketchy-like coastal landscape with fishing boats depicts one of his characteristic Neapolitan coastlines, with which the artist has enjoyed great success. In his early work, Petruolo belonged to the School of Posillipo, a group of landscape painters who had joined in Naples. The horizontal composition is determined by the azure of the water that is interrupted by the jagged rocks upper left. Three fishing boats with passengers and a fisherman sitting on a rock enhance the painting with a narrative component and provide for colorful accents.
The work is signed, dated and inscribed with ‘S. Petruolo 1887 Napoli’ on the rear part of the painting (the upper part of the painting has been cut off and mounted on the framing cardboard). The painting has been laid down on strong cardboard and mounted in a gilt wooden frame. It is optically in good condition with some paint flaking, especially affecting the margins. Inspection UV light reveals an area of retouching to the upper left. The frame is in very good condition. The size of the painting is 33 x 46 cm (46.2 x 64 cm including the lower part), and the frame measures 42 x 73.5 cm.
Salvatore Petruolo (1857-1946)
Salvatore Petruolo was a student of Gabriele Smargiassi at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. He is recorded for his wide range of coastal landscapes in the surroundings of Naples and some from Calabria. His landscapes from 1875 to 1898 show the influence of the School of Posillipo and Edoardo Dalbono. Thereafter, his paintings feature symbolist elements. His studio in Naples was visited by famous personalities, such as Emperor Frederick III, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and Princess Louise, the sister of King Edward of England. Today, works by Petruolo are on display in major museum collections, including the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples.
