An atmospheric portrait of the city of Venice, overlooking the Basilica San Marco from the Rio di Palazzo; the auction record for one of the paintings by Karl Kaufmann is around €36,000

The painting by the Austrian landscape and architectural painter Karl Kaufmann shows a beautiful view up from the Rio di Palazzo in Venice, whereas the observer gets a glance of the impressive Basilica San Marco in the left image. The sky as well as the facades are bathed in a gentle sunset glow, which in turn is reflected in the water surface, creating a shimmering light which still recalls the impressionist style of painting.

The painting is signed (retouched) lower left ‘K. Kaufmann’ and is inscribed with title and artist name ‘Venice Karl Kaufman’ as well as with old handwritten notes by the owner on the reverse. It is overall in good condition. The varnish lightly browned, occasionally small stains, partly rubbed due to framing. The image size is 31 x 47 cm, the framed dimensions are 36.5 x 53 cm. The frame with signs of wear.

Karl Kaufmann (1843-1905)

Karl Kaufmann started his artistic education at the Academy of Vienna. He subsequently travelled through European countries, such as Norway, the Netherlands, Germany or Italy. Kaufmann developed a sensitive feeling for environments and atmospheres, which helped him to specialise in landscape and architectural painting. One special feature of his oeuvre is his habit to sign his works with pseudonyms. For instance, the names B. Lambert, Charles Marchand or C. Charpentier are well-known signatures by Kaufmann. The majority of his works belongs to private collections.
