Typical late work by the well-known Berlin artist Walter Moras. The current highest auction record for a similar painting by Moras is €4,500

Walter Moras' (1856-1925) forest landscape is a typical autumnal painting of the late artist's work. Under the influence of the plein air painting, Moras created atmospheric and poetic landscapes in subtle color shades. The present painting dates from around 1900 and depicts two woodcutters sitting at a campfire in the left background. The logs are stacked on the left side in front of them. The warm tones of the leaves are finely spotted and mingle to a finely graded color play on the forest ground.

The painting is signed with ‘Moras’ lower left (a part of the signature is missing). The reverse bears a handwritten label by the Kunstverein Hamburg, inscribed with ‘Waldpartie bei Tussein Ostpreussen Berlin von W. Moras MK 275.-‘ [Forest Landscape near Tussein in East Prussia by W. Moras MK 275.-] The painting is overall in good condition, showing some paint losses, especially to the lower left corner. The paint surface is slightly discolored. At the lower edge, there is a tiny hole in the canvas. The dimensions of the canvas are 24 x 44 cm, and the frame measures 28 x 48.5 cm.
