This atmospheric village landscape in the winter is a late work by the Berlin painter Walter Moras (1856-1925). The roofs of the East Prussian village are indicated on the horizon under the broad yellow sky of the glowing sunset. The snowed fields, bare trees and the frozen brook determine the foreground. A few villagers walk on the left side of the shore. A flock of birds above them head out towards the south. This is a charming painting that enchants by the skillful lighting and the wonderful nostalgic image effect.
The painting is signed with ‘W. Moras’ lower left. The reverse bears a handwritten label by the Kunstverein Hamburg, inscribed with ‘Ostpreussisches Dorfmotiv Berlin von W. Moras MK 275.- ‘ [East Prussian Village Landscape by W. Moras MK 275.-]. It is overall in good condition, showing some paint losses to the sky and the lower margin. The paint surface is slightly discolored. The dimensions of the canvas are 24 x 44.5 cm, and the frame measures 28 x 48.2 cm.
Walter Moras (1856-1925)
Born in Berlin, the painter Walter Moras trained in the studio of the renowned marine and landscape painter Hermann Eschke. In 1876, he exhibited his first works at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. Until 1910, he was represented regularly at the Great Berlin art exhibitions. In his early works, he painted especially on the island of Rügen and in Mecklenburg, and later in the surroundings of Berlin and in the Spreewald. In his later works, Moras depicted numerous large autumn and winter paintings.
