Julius Sergius von Klever (1850-1924)

Julius Sergius von Klever (russian Julij Julevich Klever) was born in 1859 in the Russian town Dorpat. From 1867 he attended the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, where he studied with Worobjov and Mikhail K. Klodt. Awarded with multiple medals he soon acquired considerable reputation. In 1881 he was appointed professor of the Academy of Fine Arts. In the mid-1890s von Klever moved temporarily to Germany with his family and returned back to Russia in 1915. Usually being the only Russian painter, he was represented in international exhibitions in Berlin, Munich and Paris. His landscape images originate mainly from the Baltic region where his home is and bear witness to a melancholy mood, which is why Julius Sergius von Klever is regarded as representative of the so called lyrical-romantic landscapes.
