This painting was created by the Russian artist Vasilii Ivanovich Surikov in 1879. The artist comes from a long-established Siberian Cossack family and was known mainly as a major history painter. Our painting, however, shows a very private scene, a portrait of the artist's daughter, Olga Vasilievna, painted in loose impressionistic brushwork. In 1877 Surikov settled with his family in Moscow, where he regularly visited the house of the artist Petr Konchalovsky, a successful painter, whose house was a popular meeting place in the Moscow art scene. Petr Konchalovsky, who studied among others in Paris and St. Petersburg, married in 1902 Surikov’s daughter Olga. On this way the painting presumably came into the possession of the family Konchalovsky.
The painting is monogrammed and dated lower right (Cyrillic) ‘B.C. 1879’. It is in good condition. In the lower area and on the bonnet of the child minor retouching, otherwise overall of good impression. The dimensions are 33 x 22 cm.
