Finely executed and narrative portrait of a pipe-smoking old man with a newspaper; Seitz’s small-scale paintings fetch up to €8,500 at auction

This painting by Anton Seitz from 1875 is one of the painter’s typical genre portraits. An elderly man is sitting at a pub table, smoking a pipe and with a newspaper in his hand. Before him stands a lidded jug with beer. Lost in thought, the man gazes over the rims of his glasses into the distance. Seitz’s works show the influence of 17th century Dutch genre painting and he was certainly inspired by the circle of Franz Defregger in Munich. Here he rendered the nuanced flesh tones and the clothing in his distinctively fine manner of painting.

The painting is signed and dated on the edge of the table ‘Anton Seitz 1875’. It is in good condition. The edges are a little rubbed due to framing. There are some tiny retouchings to the edges and the handle of the beer mug. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 37.5 x 32.5 cm, the wood panel measures 20.9 x 16 cm.

Anton Seitz (1829-1900)

At the age of 16 Anton Seitz apprenticed with the engraver Friedrich Wagner in Nuremberg. There he later attended art school and studied under Albert Christoph Reindel and August von Kreling. In 1850 he moved to Munich where he became an assistant to the genre painter Gisbert Flüggen. Through the Munich Academy, where he taught, he became acquainted with the Munich school and soon his reputation as a genre painter. In 1876 he was appointed honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts. Seitz’s oeuvre comprises mainly of scenes which depict rural life in an often slightly humorous manner. Already during his lifetime his paintings were highly popular and sought-after.
