The Austrian painter Theodor Alphonse has shown here an impressive mountain landscape with an idyllic lake. It is executed in academic manner in fine brushwork and confident, harmonious composition, in a coloring that is limited to earthy tones that fade to gray-blue in the distance.
The painting is signed and dated lower left ‘Alphons 96’. It shows framing traces and slight surface soiling. It is overall in good condition. The frame is in good condition, too, with slight signs of wear. The painting measures 24.5 x 30 cm. The framed dimensions are 36 x 41 cm.
Theodor Alphons (1860-1897)
The artist born in Krakow visited from 1879 on the Academy in Vienna. He was trained by the landscape painter Eduard Peithner of Lichtenfels. Also in copperplate engraving and from 1885 on in etching he continued his studies. In 1893 Alphonse became a member of the Künstlerhaus in Vienna. Landscape and architectural sceneries are the main subject in his painting production for which he found his motives in the Wiener Neustadt, the Salzkammergut, in South Tyrol, Venice and Nuremberg. In his prints he created in addition to his own work copies of among others Defregger. (fea)
